Willa Cather was an American woman born on December 7th, 1873. The woman's full name is Willa Sibert Cather. Her and her family were from a farm like environment in Ireland.They then moved to Pennsylvania to live with Willa Cather's grandparents. She did not like the town of Red Cloud. Her and her family were never wealthy. The family attempted to become somewhat intellectual. Cather's father had a loan business of his own. They did not get things handed to them. Willa Cather's parents worked to get her the way they wanted to her to be. Her mother tried to make her less boy-like. She was really into fashion design and girly things that her daughter was not interested about. In fact, she had a boy cut look on her hair. According to the mother, Willa Cather's look was not suited to how she should dress or how the rest of the girls do regular things. That did not matter to Cather. One thing that did matter to her was the study of medicine. It caught her attention and helped her imagine her future job as a physician. She became committed and moved to study at the University of Nebraska in the city. Although her interest in medicine was stable, she found herself finding writing and literature more thought-provoking after a series of unexpected events happened that let her know how great of a writer she was. She followed her heart saying writing was her passion and worked with editing and publishing magazines and articles. Willa Cather became an official English teacher in the year 1901. She wrote many short stories during this period. She became a short story writer. During her whole life time she wrote about 60 short stories and 12 novels. Her writings were mostly poetry, which she loved. She had a very special way of writing. The past events in her life seemed to be a common topic in her stories as well as strong girl characters to show the power girls have. She concentrated her topics around emotion and feeling. Willa Cather had a breaking point in her life. In result, she wrote a lot about the sorrow in her life. Cather made clear that creativity, imagination, and many forms of love were a big part in her life. Many described her as "romantic."
Cather finished and got her most famous writing My Antonia. Many consider this famous novel to be her best work. The novel provides information explaining how many people, immigrate to Nebraska. Focuses on hard working people looking for a better life. Antonia is the main character who has the majority of attention and focus in the novel. Her family is Shirmerdas. Willa Cather makes some big points about women's rights in the novel relating to the main character. The story reflected her life emotions and events. That is why the book has so much significance even though it is still being neglected by many Americans still due to their opposite belief.
Willa Cather was the first woman in America ever to get an education at a university. The National Institute of Arts and Letters gave her a medal for fiction. Her writing and literature began to slack and slow down. Cather was going through her brother's death and family issues re-guarding her emotional stability. She was in the National Women's Hall of Fame in Senora Falls, New York in the year 1988. She was the first women ever to be in the hall of fame of Nebraska.
Willa Cather passed away in New York after spending 40 years living there. During her lifetime, she got acknowledged a large amount of time. She received many awards and recognition. Before Willa Cather showed her perseverance to sexual equality, there was nobody trying to do anything to change it. Because of her writings and living proof that women can be just as equal as men in August 24, 1920 women voting was added to the 19th amendment in the constitution. This woman showed that women are just as likely to succeed as men are.
